A Silvery-cheeked Hornbill (Bycanistes brevis).

I know, the hornbill turned out very blue (ordinary the feathers are black with a blue gloss), but there is also a golden pearl in his beak and a very abstract background, so I think that's ok.

This is the first time I used salt and it WORKED!

About 10 hours / watercolour, Polychromos coloured pencils, golden paint marker, pencils, rough and fine salt on watercolour paper.

EDIT: A Daily Deviation - Thank you so much! :D :) ;)

Absolutely fantastic detail of the colored feathers! The blue on the cheek and wing is, as you admitted, very blue, but in the right lighting I've observed the silvery-cheeked hornbill to have that lustrous iridescent blue color. I'm curious as to why you didn't color in all the feathers though. No matter what though this is a beautiful watercolor of a majestic and in my experience very noisy bird.

Thank you! Unfortunately I have never seen a silvery-cheek live (Only the popular species - Great Hornbill, Knobbed Hornbill...) so I only know them from photographies. At some pictures the feathers looked very blue and I liked it so much :)
Some feathers stayed white (or with some pale watercolour) and look very flat because I wanted the hornbill merging with the background - so the watercolour parts and the drawing become one level. Something like this was my intention ;)
